Basic not Rustic (that's being kind).
We based our booking on the supplied photos, description and 3 different "satellite " pictures of the property as we wanted somewhere which had its own land to walk around and to exercise our dog without affecting others (as we have at previous Homeaway locations), as well as enjoying a reasonably comfortable accommodation.
The reality was somewhat different. The land has clearly been neglected and was overgrown and impossible to cross without difficulty and indeed our only effort at doing so ended shortly after disturbing a 2 metre snake!. The building is old and whilst an attempt has been make to add some 20th century elements (intermittent wifi and running hot water), it is essentially poorly insulated so we baked at night, is full of pointless old furniture and very very dusty to be kind!. The so called 2nd bathroom was just a joke with a ridiculous shower in an insect infested corner of a basement type wash area. Luckily the main bathroom and toilet were clean and tidy but awkwardly placed next to the living space so lacked real separation.
The location was great and had there not been mature trees in the way would have afforded great views across the valley, also the butterflies and lizards were great to see however not the hornets and bees which nest in the eaves and log piles and which constantly invaded the house as soon as windows were opened. This meant being indoors required us to bake or spray with insect repellents.
On the whole we enjoyed our stay despite the accommodation, relying on friends 40 miles away to give us ideas of where else we could go to exercise our dog and ourselves as there was no information in the house as to what to see and do locally. We left some printed off maps for others to view.
Should anyone read Roger M’s review we must point out the following:
La Dancie has 3 hectares of private land, woodland and meadow, It is not parkland or a garden. It is unfair to say the land is neglected or overgrown, the grass grows long in the summer.
It is unfortunate for Roger that the meadow was cut the week after his stay but it is a beautiful meadow and meadows are cut for the grass only twice a year, by definition.
We have tried to describe the house honestly and included many photographs to that effect. We should point out that the bathroom on the ground floor is basic but clean.
The house is very much in the countryside and we are very glad that wildlife and insects still live in this part of the world.
The weather can be hot, cold wet, dry and stormy.
If you don’t like “la nature” La Dancie is not for you.
Please contact us if you are unsure about making a booking and we will answer your questions honestly.
We hope you will also read Peter D’s review for balance.
Fijn huis, mooie locatie!
