The property was clean and colourful and exactly as portrayed on website. Ideal for our needs.
We enjoyed Ouirgane and the situation . It is ideal having a bit of private garden around the house. We used the roof most of the time in the day, as it was warm and sunny and the trees full of birdsong. It was however cold at night , to be expected in March. We did have to use the electric radiators.
Mohammed and Rashid were delightful hosts as were the rest of the family. We enjoyed several home cooked evening meals and a breakfast. We were also provided with fresh milk, oranges and nuts as an extra!
We went on an excursion with Rashid to local hilltop village where we were treated to local tagine in villager's house. Another day we were driven by Mohammed to the famous Tin Mal temple and the spectacular Tizi n' Test pass that crosses the Atlas and connects to Taroudant.
We highly recommend the local Souk on a Thursday, and a visit to the local blacksmith who only works on a Thursday when all the mules/donkeys arrive in the village for the Souk.
All in all a very relaxing week with brilliant weather and friendly hospitality.
It was an absolute pleasure hosting you, thanks so much for choosing the house and Ouirgane. So glad you enjoyed your stay. All the very best!
Perfect retreat space
We loved this little home... simple and private...the scent of orange blossom...the full moon on the rooftop at night...Mohammed and his care, bees, sweet honey and smiles...the surrounding nature full of winding pathways, waving barley and poppy fields, of olive tree orchards, splashing mountain streams, and terracotta Berber villages. We will be returning very soon!
Thank you so much Sarah for your very kind words, it was wonderful hosting you!
friendly village, well equipped house, helpful hosts, beautiful area
We stayed at the house early in the new year, which is a very cold time in the mountains. Between the houses electric heaters and a well supplied fire, loads of bedding and several hours of sunshine a day on the roof, we did ok and were warm enough to enjoy the evenings inside. The hot water was not working brilliantly but the hosting neighbours brought us a big kettle to make water hot on the gas. The olive harvest was in full swing in the village & oil being pressed by mule locally every day. There are many beautiful walks nearby. The one thing I might mention is that the house does not receive much sunshine (maybe a good thing in summer!) & you can hear the road (not a big problem). The house was beautifully clean and the kitchen well equipped. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the lovely feedback!
I will look into why the hot water was not as it should be, thanks for letting me know.
Due to the large neighbouring trees and the lower winter sun, the house is shaded between November and mid February but I can assure you that the internal patio and several garden areas become very sunny after that. The roof terrace is sunny all year round as far as I remember. I think the best months are March to October for light and sun. And indeed, the leafy trees in the summer are lovely to shelter under, when the direct sun can be fierce!
I'm very glad you enjoyed the region and hope that you can spread the word on how beautiful the surrounding landscapes are.
All the very best, Peter
Maison Shayne, a real gem in the high atlas mountains
We spent 10 days at ‘Maison Shayne’ and we could have stayed longer. The house is lovely and the neighbours are very friendly and welcoming. The whole setting is an excellent way to experience real rural Moroccan village life from your own private sanctuary. The house is a traditional Berber farmhouse renovated with a lot of taste and style and very well maintained. Mohammed and his family help, cook and arrange trips if wanted, but there is no obligation and in general they keep a friendly distance. During our stay, we explored the mountains and villages of the high atlas, we went on guided (guide Abdul is highly recommended) and unguided hikes, we went swimming in the nearby hotel pools, we visited markets (the one in Amizmiz is very original with hardly any other tourists), hung out in the pink patio, read, played games, cooked delicious meals, painted and drew: we had a great holiday. Even our two teenage boys enjoyed it (no WIFI in the house ;-)
Dear cherished guests, Thank you so much for your review, I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Maison Shayne and look forward to welcoming you on another occasion! All the very best, Peter
ps: There is wifi from an iPad that my house manager can supply, you can connect your mobile device to it via the hotspot option. There is a small charge. But it's sometimes nice just to switch off from daily routines!
Séjour très agréable, Mohammed et sa famille sont très accueillants et les repas sont copieux et délicieux. La maison est propre, fonctionnelle et confortable. Je ne peux que recommander cette maison.
Thank you so much for your kind review, I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that you found Mohamed and his family tremendous hosts, and loved the delicious food. All the very best, Peter
Very pleasant stay
Small Berber home accessed via a path and shared gate. Vibrantly decorated, which makes it feel very cheerful. Moroccan-style furniture - low tables, no sofa, and no seating on the terrace apart from a 'poof' and a low stool. We didn't find it that comfortable, but there are plenty of cushions, so you can improvise to make it a bit more bearable. The garden isn't private - it is next to a shared path that is used to access adjoining cottages. The terrace is also (potentially) overlooked - although there was no one else around when we stayed. I certainly wouldn't have been comfortable sunbathing if there had been more people about. The rooms are rather basic, and quite dark - this may have been a factor of the time of year (we visited in mid-October). There is no sink in the bathroom - meaning you had to use the sink in the kitchen after you used the toilet, so not ideal for those who are very particular, and although the shower looks very basic, the water pressure was good and the water was hot!
We had a car, and we able to explore the local area for some great walks. The area is very quiet, and there is very little traffic on the road, and driving is straightforward and relatively safe.
The saving grace for this property is the food and service provided by Mohammed and is lovely wife. We opted for breakfast and dinner on most days. Breakfast consisted berber coffee (highly perfumed, strong, but pleasant), plenty of homemade Moroccan bread, and homemade jam. Dinner was a tagine with meat (chicken or goat), vegetables and more of the bread. The food was simple, tasty and filling, although the portions weren't huge - there was always enough.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
I'm sorry you felt that the terrace was uncomfortable, I will make sure that more large cushions and rugs are available for people to use up there, this is the style of the seating in Morocco and I like to keep it in the vernacular style. In regards to privacy, a large part of the terrace is totally private, however I will make sure that the bamboo fencing is in place, as we carried out works on the roof in the summer and perhaps my house manager had not replaced this fully.
The garden however is TOTALLY private, it is not overlooked and is NOT a public path, this I have to make absolutely clear. What you may have noticed is my house manager's family using the path to get to the garage and adjoining piece of land. I have no problem with this at all and it is rare that they use it when guests are staying. I will however point out that you found this bothersome.
The shower is a straightforward hand held one, last time I was there in May it was perfectly fine, but I will check that it is replaced if it is looking tired. The shower area is a sort of wet room with plenty of water on hand and therefore a sink is not really necessary, however I will look into putting one in now that you mention it! The windows are all original and being an earth built house, they tend to be small to keep the warmth in in winter and keep out the heat in summer. There is plenty of lighting for reading and dressing etc. Most times of the year, the house's internal patio is flooded with light, which penetrates the rooms through the doors to this patio.
What is very important to note is that this is an authentic Berber house, in a very mature and unspoiled setting, it is not a 'villa' on the outskirts of Marrakech.
What I find slightly disheartening is that you also had to criticise the portions of food, which quite frankly is totally uncalled for. The portions are very copious for most people, and the prices for the meals very low. In any case, although there is always room for improvement, one must bear in mind that this is not a chi chi riad but an extremely stylish bohemian bolt hole and a very rare offering. It does not however fall in the luxury category, and this is very much reflected in the price! The pictures on the property's site are very clear and the house looks exactly like those pictures, but perhaps your expectations were somewhat different, for which I can only apologise. All the very best, Peter
