Amazing Lake Como Experience
You realize you are in a special place the moment you enter Torno, and Vila Matilde simply brings it up a notch. We rented a car at the airport in Milan and it was a quick one hour drive to the property. Tony the property manager met us in town and we followed him to the private parking across the street from Vila Matilde. For those not comfortable driving and parking in tight streets and spots, then opt for a car service instead. The problem is that there aren’t cabs when you get to town so you’ll be relying on the ferry service to get around. The property is set on the side of the hill and the entrance to the property is through a rustic gate you would picture in a castle. You’ll walk up a gravel/stone driveway facing the side of the majestic property. Beautiful landscaping any which way you look. Our Villa was the penthouse unit. All the units are accessible via an elevator so stairs were never used in our case. Our unit was a two bedroom on multiple levels. Our living room was air conditioned and furnished with classical furniture and a beautiful mural painted on the ceiling. The kitchen has beautiful wood accents and was equipped with every top of the line cooking utensil/electrical appliances. The entire kitchen had windows facing the lake and the Alps. The master bedroom was large, equipped with air conditioning and plenty of room to store your clothes. The bed was something you would imagine a king sleeping in. The bathroom in the first floor was colorful, bright and clean. You would then climb stairs to get to the second bedroom located in the spire of the castle. This was a perfect room for kids. The entire room was windows perfectly furnished with black out shades and air conditioner. Their is a small loft space halfway up the spire as well as a clean, bright and modern bathroom. The penthouse unit comes with the best terrace in the building including sweeping views of the alps and the lake. Also you get a good view of the pool below so you can let the kids swim while enjoying wine/cheese on the terrace. This vacation spot was unforgettable and I can’t see how we can’t come back. I wish all the spots we picked on vacation measured up to Vila Matilde.
Phenomenal Getaway with Outstanding View!
We couldn't have been more pleased with our vacation accommodation! Villa Matilda met all of our expectations and more. Our two-bedroom/two-bath residence was more than adequate for our two teenage sons and us. The unit was very tastefully decorated according to traditional Italian style with every amenity we needed. Mind you, this is an old and beautifully restored property with lots of unique details but has every modern convenience. Upon arrival, our kitchen was stocked with all of the necessities to have a complete dinner and breakfast before figuring out where the closest grocery was located. Our host, Tony, was most accommodating upon arrival showing us where to park (this can be very tricky in this very popular destination) and taking us and our luggage up to the house. He gave us a tour of the entire property, shared ideas for local activities and restaurants and was easily accessible. We did not use our rental car very often but used the ferry system to make our way to various destinations around the lake. Local pharmacy, grocery store, gelateria, and restaurants are wonderful, they are less than a ten-minute walk to the upper town and a little bit longer to the lower town. Beware that everything in town is done on foot and that there are lots of steps and narrow passageways to traverse. Wear comfortable shoes! The view of Lake Como from our unit was simply stunning. We hope to return!
Beautiful apartment in an idyllic location.
We had a fantastic stay and would recommend this apartment to anybody looking for a well equipped character property with stunning lakeside views and pool that is a short walking distance to restaurants also. We especially appreciated the poolside kitchen and honesty bar and the warm welcome by Viviana.
Amazing place, with a great view
We really enjoyed staying at "The Castle" - perfect view from everywhere in the flat, and great hospitality from Tony
Amazing Property and Amazing Hosts
Let me start by saying we have stayed in a number of Homeaway properties around the world. We have been very lucky to have fantastic experiences and some great hosts, some more involved in our stay than others. We selected this property based on the incredible uniqueness of the property, the location which we wanted to get to know, and the many great reviews. We were not disappointed.
From the beginning Tony was checking in to see what we might want stocked in the apartment, he offered to pick us up from the airport (which we did, and paid him for this service), and asked for things we wanted to do and provided excellent options. He even tracked down some turkey (not easy in Italy) for us to cook a "Thanksgiving" dinner since we were there over the Thanksgiving weekend (obviously Americans).
He and Shirley were incredible hosts. They ended up picking up our daughter who was training in from Umbria and was delayed, driving us to a location to pick up a hike, and even picking us up in Bellagio when we got delayed due to limited ferry schedules, and were at risk of missing a train out of Como. This went WAY above and beyond in our experience.
The property itself is incredible. They have spared no expense in renovating this historic structure. I have renovated several properties (one historic) and was very impressed with the quality and attention to detail. We had every comfort of home with the added benefit of the unbelievable views over the lake below. While we were here in the winter, I can only imagine what it's like in the summer with your own pool (extremely rare in Lake Como). The floors in our apartment were a combination of locally mined stone set in a herringbone pattern, or intricately carved wood floors. Bathrooms were roomy with some fun design elements. The kitchen was fully functional with a dishwasher. For those of you considering longer stays, this comes with a brand new washer and dryer (extremely rare in Italy).
Setting aside the beautiful property and wonderful hosts. The town of Torno was a quaint and inviting smaller town on Lake Como. It has easy ferry service to Como (25-30 minutes), and from there you can get to spots further north on the lake (e.g. Bellagio, Tremezzo). We had a great meal right across the street our first night looking out over the lake. The lower piazza is a great spot, and again, during spring, summer, and probably even fall, I'm sure it's great.
Clearly I'm a big fan.
Perfection! Incredible view, wonderful property, charming hosts
Of all the many places we've stayed around the world, this is absolutely the one we least wanted to leave.
We arrived by car having stayed previously in Austria and Germany and for those thinking of hiring a car to arrive at Como, my advice would be get a small one! The roads are narrow, although we were able to drive the hired Mercedes E-Class there with a little caution. The entrance to Villa Matilda is a gate and tunnel through rock in the side of the mountain and is quite tight, so would be much easier in a small car. Driving up to the Villa we were greeted by Viviana, who looks after the Villa when the owners are away. Viviana spoke perfect English and was incredibly charming and helpful throughout our stay. After unloading we were able to leave the car in secure parking at another property the other side of the road.
The grounds of the villa overlook the lake in a panoramic view and have beautifull plants, trees and a wonderful pool. There is also a barbecue that we used once and outside dining tables. The pool area also has the best equipped pool kitchen/dining area that we've ever had. There was a full kitchen with ice machine and everything one could desire just for use of the residents at the pool. This was really well thought out vision from the owner.
The suite itself was beautiful with perfect lake views from the kitchen, lounge and the smaller bedroom. A fully equipped kitchen and laundry room is a real bonus on holiday. The smaller bedroom which is upstairs is incredibly cute and has amazing views of the lake and it was loved by the children.
The terrace though is the star - magnificent. Full high-level panoramic views of the lake at night whilst enjoying an evening drink are memories that will never fade and that we will almost certainly come back to again.
Torno itself is very quaint and quiet and there is a gate at the end of the garden from which it is possible to walk to the shop and restaurants through a series of quirky tiny roman passages between the houses, to avoid using the road through Torno. This leads easily to the ferries or the lake-front restaurants (I have reviewed a couple in Torno elsewhere on Trip Advisor - the Albergo Ristorante Vapore being a highlight).
Quite simply the combination of location, property and hospitality is probably the best we've had anywhere in the world and would have cost at least 5x as much to get at the Villa D'Este.
