This is a unique property on the island of Maui. Hana is far more residential than commercial, and this house is consistent with that.
The house is split into two residences - upper floor and lower floor.
Both have full kitchens, but in Hawaii, space is limited. The rooms with twin beds can be transformed into a king bed with a nicely-padded belt system that plugs up the gap between beds.
The landscaping of the uniquely large yard is stunning. Plants/trees are labeled for identification purposes. You will hear numerous birds in the otherwise quiet tropical morning’s, and probably will see multiple mongooses. (Mongeese?)
There are local fruit and coffee stands nearby within walking distance, which probably would have been interesting had they actually been open like their signs said they were. But in the morning, the traffic is very light, and finding interesting places to walk (or jog) is easy.
There are bugs.
Mosquitoes and cockroaches are normal, and must be included in your plan. I had deet repellent; my wife had some natural whatchacallit lotion that promised a lot, but failed to deliver.
Red and black sand beaches in the area, and Hanggliding (ultralight) at nearby areas are terrific, as are the food trucks in Hana.
This is not a resort feel; rather a home-grown appeal.
We stayed in the Hana Palms Retreat for two days March 2019. We rented the entire 2 story home and really enjoyed it's location for our Hana trip. There were 11 of us and the house fit our needs perfectly. The owner was very nice and check in and out was easy. The grounds surrounding the home are lovely too. Hana is very tropical and it is hard to find a place there to accommodate such a large group so this fit that need with 5 bedrooms. One drawback is only 2 bathrooms, but we made do with that. Hana is too long of a journey to enjoy in one day. With two nights we were able to relax and enjoy a beautiful sunrise on Koke Beach and a trek in the bamboo forest. Thank you again for your hospitality.
Perfect Hana “home base” for our party of 9!
Perfect Hana property for our party of 9, 4 adults and 5 teenagers. Location was great and the house contained everything we needed for our 2 nights in Hana. Great value for the price.
As previous reviewers have mentioned, you are in the rain forest. If a gecko in the house and lots of bugs and spiders outside are not for you, Hana is not the place to stay. Of the four properties I have stayed at in Hana over the years, this one was the most “bug free” of them all.
Would stay here again. Great home base for our group.
The Way to Experience Hana
We enjoyed a 3 day stay. Robert met us as we arrived, answered any questions and gave us good advice where to eat out.Offered advice on hiking which we followed.
Accomodations were good. The property really gives you the feel for living in a rainforest. That is why we went to Hana!
Accomodations had everything promised. We just unpacked our bag andset off on adventure. We would recommend staying here .The decor, the property, the wildlife were all part of being in a rainforest.
The real plus, you disconnect from the technical world and Relax!!!.
Mahalo Robert for the experience we were looking for,
Our group of 10 booked both the upper and lower residences for our vacation. We stayed three nights in Hana and we loved it! Keep in mind, this is the rainforest. Things are wet and yes, there can be a mildew smell. Yes, there are bugs, spiders, lizards, and aggressive mosquitos but that’s to be expected in this tropical climate! So if you’re looking to be in 5 star luxury and comfort, stay somewhere else. But if you want hiking, exploring, picking fruit from trees, and are fascinated with the various critters of the rainforest, then this is it.
As for the house itself, it served its purpose of a bed, bath, and kitchen. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need to cook at home since there’s not much in the way of “eating out” in Hana. The beds upstairs are mostly comfortable and it being December, the temperature was perfect. My nephew did get quite the scare folding out the sofa bed in the lower residence when a large spider jumped out! So he refused to sleep there the whole time but again, this is to be expected IN THE RAINFOREST.
Overall, we had a good time exploring Hana and the Black Sand Beach, the Kaeleku Caverns, the Pipiwai trail, eating at Huli Huli chicken, and other fun little things to do in the area.
